DAF Pulser v2

The DAF Pulser is a modified megaphone that generates sound impulses. These impulses are directed and reflected by the surrounding environment. By listening to the impulse response, the acoustic properties of the space can be explored. The impulses are emitted regularly. Their volume, pitch and frequency are conrolled by the custom-made console. Version 2 also features a button for manually triggering impulses.

The first version of the Pulser originated from my work at the Interactive Media Lab at the Academy of Fine Arts, based on ideas from a workshop by Jan St Werner and his class Dynamische Akustische Forschung (DAF). The Pulsers have become established in many workshops, performances, etc., for exploring spatial sound. The second version with a manual trigger was developed for the work of Sam Auinger, a close collaborator of DAF, and was featured at Ars Electronica 2020.
